Choosing the correct speaker cable is important for getting the best performance from your audio system. If the cable is too thin for the distance or power being used, the system can lose efficiency, sound weaker than expected or perform less reliably over time.
The right cable depends on the type of speaker system you are installing. A small low impedance speaker setup is different to a commercial 100V line system, and a short cable run does not need the same cable size as a long run across a venue, school, warehouse or hospitality space.

The correct speaker cable is usually based on three main factors: the type of system, the length of the cable run and the amount of power being delivered.
A short run to a small speaker may only need relatively standard cable. A longer run, or a system carrying higher power, may need a thicker cable to reduce loss.
The two most common system types are low impedance speaker systems and 100V line speaker systems. They work differently, so cable choice should be considered differently.
Low impedance systems are usually 4Ω, 6Ω or 8Ω. These are common in hi-fi setups, PA systems, passive loudspeakers and some venue sound systems.
With low impedance systems, cable resistance matters. The longer the cable run, the more resistance is added between the amplifier and the loudspeaker. If the cable is too thin, some of the amplifier’s power is lost in the cable rather than reaching the speaker.

Up to 10m: 1.5mm² speaker cable is usually suitable.
10m to 25m: 2.5mm² speaker cable is normally a better option.
25m and above: 4mm² or larger may be required, depending on the load and power level.
Lower impedance speakers, such as 4Ω, are generally more demanding than 8Ω speakers. If the cable run is long or the amplifier is working hard, stepping up to a thicker cable is usually the safer choice.
100V line systems are commonly used for commercial audio installations. They are often found in retail shops, schools, warehouses, offices, visitor attractions and other spaces where multiple speakers are connected across longer distances.
Unlike low impedance systems, 100V systems are designed to work better over long cable runs. This makes them ideal for distributed audio, where several ceiling speakers, wall speakers or pendant speakers may be connected to the same amplifier line.
Cable choice for a 100V system depends on the total wattage of the speakers on the line and the length of the cable run.
As a practical guide:
Smaller 100V systems: 1.5mm² to 2.5mm² is often suitable.
Medium commercial systems: 2.5mm² is commonly used.
Higher power systems or longer runs: 4mm² may be required.
Although 100V systems are more tolerant of longer cable distances, cable size still matters. If the cable is undersized, performance can suffer, particularly on higher-power systems or very long runs.
Using cable that is too thin can cause several issues. The system may lose volume, sound less full or struggle to deliver the expected performance. In low impedance systems, thin cable can have a noticeable effect on bass response and amplifier efficiency.
In commercial systems, undersized cable can also cause uneven performance across the site. Speakers further along the run may not perform as well, especially if the line is carrying a higher total wattage.
